Bel Air was 1 of 13 Prince William County Public Schools to receive the 2013 Teacher Incentive Performance Award (TIPA) project awards for demonstrating the student growth and achievement, quality teaching, and the school environment needed to help children make major educational strides. The project is part of the ongoing PWCS commitment to boosting the academic proficiency of students in the neediest schools.

Bel Air Happy Video
Each marking period the Bel Air Morning News Team films a music video to share with the school. This Marking Period the students wanted to film "Happy" by Pharrell Williams and have Mr. Mitchell star in the video! They felt that the video, and the message, was a perfect fit for Bel Air Elementary School. So, come on and clap along if you feel that happiness is the truth!

Check out the video here.
Homework

Bel Air Elementary will be implementing some guidelines regarding homework
based on the new regulation, 663-1. Due to the revision of the regulation on
July 24, 2013, Bel Air’s expectations are:

v  Kindergarten ~10-20 min. of reading daily

v  Grades 1st-2nd ~ 10-20 min. of reading daily

v  Grades 3rd-5th ~ 30-50 min. of reading daily

v  Homework will be project based when necessary

The purpose of homework is to reinforce skills learned in school that the child can complete “Independently” they shouldn’t need parent support to complete their homework. For the 2013-2014 school year, Bel Air Elementary implemented a new “Take Home Reading” program. Students are provided a baggie with their “Independent” DRA level. This means that they should be able to decode, comprehend, and read the book fluently without support. We understand some students may have a higher DRA level because of fluency and decoding, however comprehension may be a concern.
